Get Relief from Plantar Fasciitis & Heel Pain
Does your heel hurt when you first get out of bed, after sitting for a while, or when you spend a lot of time walking or standing?
Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. Although symptoms are often felt near the bottom of the heel, the problem can be influenced by several factors, including foot and ankle mechanics, calf flexibility, activity levels, footwear, and the way you walk or run.
Our plantar fasciitis treatment in Edmonton focuses on identifying factors that may be contributing to your heel pain and developing a personalized treatment plan to help you move more comfortably.

Common Causes & Contributing Factors of Plantar Fasciitis
The plantar fascia is a strong band of connective tissue running along the bottom of the foot from the heel toward the toes. It helps support the arch and plays an important role in absorbing and transferring forces when you stand, walk, and run.
Plantar fasciitis can develop when the plantar fascia is repeatedly overloaded or irritated. Factors that may contribute include:
- A sudden increase in walking, running, or exercise
- Spending long periods standing or walking on hard surfaces
- Tight calf muscles or reduced ankle mobility
- Changes in foot mechanics
- Flat feet or excessive pronation
- High arches
- Weakness or reduced control of the foot and lower leg
- Unsupportive or worn footwear
- Changes in body weight or activity levels
- Returning to activity too quickly after a period of inactivity
- Repetitive stress from running or sports
Heel pain is not always plantar fasciitis. Other causes can include Achilles tendon problems, heel-pad irritation, stress fractures, arthritis, nerve irritation, or other foot conditions. A proper assessment can help determine what is causing your symptoms.

How Chiropractic Plantar Fasciitis Treatment Helps Edmonton Patients
Plantar fasciitis may hurt at the heel, but effective treatment shouldn’t necessarily focus on the heel alone.
Your feet and ankles work together with your knees, hips, pelvis, and spine whenever you stand, walk, run, or exercise. Restrictions in ankle movement, tight muscles, altered foot mechanics, or changes elsewhere in the lower extremity may affect how forces are distributed through the foot.
That’s why our approach looks at how your entire lower extremity is functioning.
Treatment may include:
- Comprehensive assessment and diagnosis
- Personalized treatment plan
- Gentle foot and ankle joint adjustments or mobilization when appropriate
- Assessment of foot and ankle mechanics
- Evaluation of the knees, hips, pelvis, and spine
- Soft tissue therapy
- Calf and plantar fascia mobility and flexibility work
- Foot, ankle, and lower-leg strengthening exercises
- Balance and stability exercises when appropriate
- Footwear and activity recommendations
- Gradual return-to-walking, running, or sport guidance
- Assessment for custom foot orthotics when appropriate
Treatment is tailored to your individual examination findings, symptoms, activities, and goals. The goal is to reduce pain, improve function, address contributing mechanical factors, and help you return to the activities that are important to you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Chiropractors assess and treat problems involving joints, muscles, connective tissues, nerves, and movement throughout the body, including the feet and ankles.
For plantar fasciitis, treatment may include improving foot and ankle mobility, addressing tight or irritated soft tissues, exercises to improve strength and flexibility, and evaluating foot mechanics, footwear, and other factors that may be contributing to the problem. Even the spine can affect the feet.
Because heel pain has several possible causes, an examination is important before determining the most appropriate treatment.
Plantar fasciitis commonly causes pain underneath the heel or along the bottom of the foot.
Pain is often most noticeable during the first few steps after getting out of bed in the morning or when standing after sitting for a prolonged period. Symptoms may ease somewhat as you begin moving but return after prolonged walking, standing, running, or other activity.
During sleep and periods of rest, the foot remains relatively still. The plantar fascia and surrounding tissues can become stiff, making the first few steps particularly uncomfortable when the tissues are suddenly loaded again.
As you begin walking, the foot and ankle warm up and symptoms may temporarily decrease. However, pain can return later with prolonged standing or activity.
This depends on the severity of your symptoms and the activity involved.
Complete inactivity is not always necessary, but repeatedly pushing through significant heel pain can continue to aggravate the tissues. Temporarily modifying running, long walks, jumping, or other high-load activities may allow symptoms to settle while you work on mobility, strength, and other contributing factors.
We can help you determine appropriate activity levels and develop a gradual return-to-activity plan.
Not everyone with plantar fasciitis needs orthotics.
Custom foot orthotics may be appropriate when an assessment identifies foot mechanics or arch-support needs that appear to be contributing to repeated stress on the plantar fascia.
We assess your feet, movement, footwear, and symptoms before determining whether orthotics may be appropriate for you.
Recovery varies depending on how long you’ve had the problem, the severity of your symptoms, your activity levels, and the factors contributing to the condition.
Some people improve relatively quickly, while persistent plantar fasciitis can take longer. Following an appropriate treatment and rehabilitation plan and gradually returning to activity can help support recovery.
This depends on how long you’ve had heel pain, the severity of the condition, your examination findings, and your activity goals.
After your assessment, we’ll explain our findings and recommend a treatment plan based on your individual situation.
We provide direct billing for most insurance plans. If direct billing is not available, you can submit your receipt for reimbursement.
Please provide your insurance information before your appointment if you’d like us to direct bill.
