Are you wanting to get stronger to improve your performance? Or perhaps as you age you have noticed you just aren’t as strong as you used to be despite being active. Research shows that chiropractic adjustments can help increase muscle strength. In this post I will discuss how you can get stronger with chiropractic care.
Good spine and body alignment makes your nerves and muscles stronger
In order for your muscles to get stronger the brain has to be able to send strong nerve signals to them. However, proper movement and alignment of your bones and joints in your body (spine, arms, and legs) is necessary to feed your brain strong nerve signals. In turn, your brain can send strong nerve signals to your muscles.
On the other hand, poor mobility and poor alignment in your bones and joints in your body will cause weak nerve signals and therefore weaker muscles. This is where chiropractic care can step in to help you.
How you can get stronger with chiropractic care
Chiropractic care helps to create better movement and alignment in your bones and joints. More specifically, chiropractors use adjustments to move and realign your bones and joints. Ultimately, the chiropractic adjustments help your brain and nerves work better so your muscles get stronger.
Research supporting how you can get stronger with chiropractic care
I found six studies done since 2009 that looked at whether or not a SINGLE chiropractic adjustment (spinal manipulation) would strengthen either the upper or limb muscles. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) The conclusions are that a chiropractic adjustment can strengthen the muscles at least in the short-term (10 minutes up to at least 60 minutes). A research review done in 2019 concluded the same thing. (7) Further studies are necessary to make the claim that chiropractic adjustments can help strengthen the muscles long-term. More on this in a moment.
One of these studies also made the remark that increases in muscle strength in HEALTHY people (those without injuries) vs. NON-HEALTHY people (those with an injury or functional problem) could be less after chiropractic adjustments. (4) The researchers stated, “…it is possible that they (HEALTHY people) did not have the capacity to allow for large changes…” I have been a chiropractor since 1995 and I agree with this comment. In other words, I have also observed larger increases in muscle strength after adjusting patients who have some type of health issue versus patients who are really healthy.
Here are a few examples of what I mean by a “health issue”. A health issue can show up on someone as obvious pain or other symptom(s). As well, it may show up as more subtle signs or symptoms such as:
- numbness or tingling
- muscle tightness or fatigue
- general fatigue
- problems focussing or brain fog
- poor posture
Can you get stronger and stay stronger with regular chiropractic care?
Despite lack of research, I have observed when chiropractic care extends beyond a SINGLE session you can get stronger long-term. If regular chiropractic care is used by a patient to help keep their spine mobile and in good alignment, their muscle strength tends to follow suit. In other words, patients can get stronger and can stay stronger with regular chiropractic care.
The potential for chiropractic care to help get patients stronger has huge implications in regards to sports performance, muscle rehabilitation, and injury prevention. Furthermore, as you age, regular chiropractic care can help keep you more active so you can carry on with hobbies, daily chores, and physical activities you enjoy.
Summary
Good mobility and alignment of your spine and body is essential for a strong nervous system and strong muscles. Unfortunately, in the modern day world, poor mobility and poor alignment of people’s spines and bodies is all too common. Chiropractic care is the perfect catalyst to get your body aligned, mobile and stronger.
You have the potential to get stronger and stay stronger with regular chiropractic care. Whether you are a serious athlete or just want to carry on with daily chores or activities you enjoy, regular chiropractic care can help you. Why not give it a try?
