Many of my patients in Edmonton ask why their hands go numb or tingle, especially at night or after sitting at a desk. Numbness in hands is usually caused by nerve irritation, compression, or circulation issues. While it can be alarming, understanding the common causes can help you take steps toward relief and prevent long-term problems.
Common Causes of Numb Hands
Numbness often originates from a pinched nerve in the neck or shoulder. Carpal tunnel syndrome is another common cause, especially if you type or use your hands repetitively. Poor posture at a desk or while sleeping can also compress nerves, leading to tingling sensations. In rare cases, circulation issues contribute to hand numbness.
When to Seek Professional Help
Persistent tingling, weakness affecting your grip, or pain spreading up your arm warrants professional evaluation. Ignoring symptoms can lead to worsening nerve irritation or long-term discomfort.
How Chiropractic Care Can Help
Chiropractic adjustments focus on correcting spinal misalignments that compress nerves. We also address posture, ergonomics, and soft tissue restrictions. A targeted chiropractic approach can relieve nerve pressure and improve hand function.
What Our Edmonton Patients Say About Numbness in Their Hands
“I had so much pain in my right hand that I could not hold a pen or cup. My MD told me I had carpal tunnel and told me to wear a hand brace and take prescription anti-inflammatory medication. I did not know what to expect when I saw a chiropractor for the first time, however Dr. Collins was very calming and informative. Nothing he did in my treatment was painful. Within just a few visits my hand was actually better! Dr. Collins knew I did not have carpal tunnel. He actually had me x-rayed (which my MD never did) and found that I had degeneration in my neck. The bone spurs were pressing on the nerve that affected my whole arm. That was ten years ago. As I have aged, a few more symptoms have cropped up but Dr. Collins has always “nipped them in the bud”. Dr. Collins also makes sure that your emotional health stays in good working order along with the physical.”

Simple Tips to Reduce Numbness at Home
Stretch your forearms and hands regularly, adjust your desk setup, and check to make sure your pillow isn’t too high. Short breaks to move your arms during work can also prevent nerve compression.
If numbness in your hands keeps returning or isn’t improving, it may indicate irritation of the nerves in your neck or upper back.
A proper examination can help identify the cause and determine whether chiropractic care may help restore normal nerve function.
