What To Expect At Your Edmonton Chiropractic Appointments
During your visits we want to get to know you so we have a good understanding about what you value in your life and what your health goals are. When we understand what you value and how your health ties into you values, we can work together to help you reach your health goals. Chiropractic becomes a partnership. We believe strongly in empowering our patients to take ownership in their health and we want you to feel comfortable with the care you have chosen.
Your First Visit: Consultation and Examination
Upon entering our office our friendly office assistant(s) will greet and welcome you. We will request the new patient forms you filled out prior to your first appointment. Filling the new patient forms out at home or work will save yourself 10-20 minutes in our office and will ensure that the Chiropractor has enough time with you to do a thorough history and examination. The paperwork provides us with general information about yourself and your health history. You will then meet with the Chiropractor to get know each other. If we think we can help you, after discussing your health challenges(s) and health history, we will examine you to determine the possible cause of your problem. The examination is painless and is focussed on assessing how well you spine and nervous system are functioning together. In other words, do you have subluxations (nerve interference and spinal misalignments) contributing to your health challenge(s)? Your Chiropractor will feel your spine for subluxations, assess your posture, do some balance tests, and a thermography scan. If further diagnostic images are necessary, we will refer you to a diagnostic imaging clinic that is in a convenient location for you. X-rays, for example, are covered by Alberta Health Care and can be obtained on a walk-in basis on the same day.
Expect to be at our office 30-45 minutes if you have your new patient forms completed prior to coming in.
Your Second Visit: Report of Findings
Prior to your second visit, your Chiropractor will analyze your examination findings from your first visit (including your x-rays if they were warranted) and prepare a detailed "Report of Findings" booklet. Your Chiropractor will take approximately 15 minutes on your second visit to show you what they found during the examination, your x-rays, and recommend a program of care that meets your needs. If you require a further assessment or treatment from another health professional, your Chiropractor will make the necessary referral.
When will I get my first treatment?
This will depend on the severity and extent of your health problem (if you have one). It also depends on whether your Chiropractor requires diagnostic imaging (x-rays) to be done before commencing the adjustments. With your consent, we like to start the adjustments as soon as possible...meaning the first or second visit.
How long are Regular Visits?
Visits vary from approximately 2 minutes up to 10 minutes depending on the complexity of the problem that day and how well you are responding to the adjustments. Your Chiropractor always rechecks to make sure your body responds favorably to the adjustments every time you come in.
When can I expect results?
Everyone responds differently to care. It is not uncommon for patients to notice an improvement after the first treatment, but this is not always the case. Sometimes it can take days to weeks of consistent care to gain the momentum and create an environment inside the body to start healing itself. Many patients have years of accumulated damage in the spine and each visit helps to peel away those layers of damage gradually. So it can take along time to do that. Factors which affect your healing process are your overall condition, your age, your compliance to the recommended program of care, your diet, your mental/emotional stress levels, and even your attitude towards your own healing.
Everybody is unique and different and therefore everyone requires a unique and customized wellness plan. The foundation of our overall wellness lifestyle is maintaining a healthy nervous system. Enhancing your lifestyle outside of our office and reducing stress will bring you back to a healthier state of being over time. Developing a healthy posture and good spinal alignment, eating healthy, taking nutritional supplements, regular exercise, keeping your weight under control and stress relief, will speed up your recovery and healing time. You will be given recommendations on what you can do at home and work at the beginning of your treatment program and throughout your treatment program to get healthier and help avoid future health challenges. If you desire an overall wellness lifestyle, our wellness team will work with you to create good habits and routines that support your success.
It is highly recommend you attend our New Patient Orientation. It is held once per month during evenings for 45 minutes. It is an excellent, informative and interactive health talk that gives you the bigger picture about how vital your nervous system is, how to get the best results from your care, and how to prevent future degenerative illness. Please register with one of our assistants to attend. You are more than welcome to bring friends and family members along with you. This is actually preferred. If the people closest to you understand what kind of care you are getting and why, they are more apt to support you.
**There is no extra fee to attend.
