Chiropractic Care for Low Back Pain

by Dr. Dean Collins (Edmonton Chiropractor)

Chiropractic is a healing art founded over a century ago.  The art, science, and philosophy of Chiropractic focus on the health and function of the spine and nervous system in order to keep your body and mind healthy and functioning optimally and in a state of balance or homeostasis.

When we develop health challenges or symptoms such as low back pain, it means our body is out of balance.  From a Chiropractor's perspective, one of the reasons this lack of balance or homeostasis occurs is when the spine is subluxated (spinal misalignment with nerve interference).  The solution for low back pain would be to realign the spine with Chiropractic adjustments and correct the nerve interference so the body can heal itself and reach a state of homeostasis.

There is a science to Chiropractic and it is firmly endorsed by research.  This is especially true when we look at the research regarding chiropractic adjustments for low back pain.  Results from most studies suggest that frequent adjustments over 2 to 4 weeks achieve equivalent or superior improvement in pain and function when compared with other commonly used interventions, such as physical modalities, medication, education, or exercise, for short, intermediate, and long-term follow-up.

Furthermore, there is a high degree of chiropractic patient satisfaction.  The following are some of the statistics:

  • The 2009 Consumer Reports Rating Centre survey identified chiropractic treatment as the most satisfying treatment for back pain.
  • In 2006, Alberta patients reported a 90 per cent satisfaction rating with chiropractic care (Health Quality Council of Alberta).
  • A 2003 Environics study reported chiropractic had the highest patient satisfaction level amongst treatment approaches for back pain.
  • The 2003 Environics study also identified chiropractic as the most popular choice for those consulting a health care practitioner for back pain, despite much higher co-payments/user fees than for medical and para-medical care under the Canadian health care system.
