Everyone knows the old adage that declares "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." This time-honored wisdom certainly makes sense. We wouldn't wait until we were riding on the wheel rim ...View Article

Common Questions and Answers
Why would a newborn get chiropractic adjustments?
Adjustments help alleviate spinal subluxations (nerve interference and spinal misalignment) caused by intrauterine constraint, abnormal positioning in the uterus, and spinal distress from the journey through the birth canal or during the delivery process itself. Ideally, babies should be checked and adjusted as soon as possible after birth.
It is important to note that 65 percent of neurological development (i.e. development of the brain and nervous system) occurs in your child's first year. It is therefore imperative to ensure your baby has every opportunity to maximize his or her nerve function during this critical period. Having your child checked and adjusted regularly gives them the best opportunity to develop and function optimally physically and mentally.
Even today's "natural" childbirth methods can stress an infant's spine. Colic, poor appetite, ear infections or erratic sleeping habits may be signs of spinal distress from the birth process. Pediatric adjustments are gentle. Knowing exactly where to adjust, the amount of pressure applied is no more than you'd use to test the ripeness of a tomato. Chiropractors also use low force mechanical adjusting instruments like the activator to adjust a baby's spine.
Are Chiropractors trained to treat children?
Yes. Chiropractors take Pediatric courses as part of their curriculum in Chiropractic College. Some Chiropractors also take Pediatric courses for continuing education once they have graduated. During their education they learn how to assess and adjust children of different sizes in a gentle manner.
Childhood is a very active stage of life. The normal childhood activities of jumping, falling, and running can cause subluxations (spinal misalignments and nerve interference). Often these subluxations are painless and can cause health problems if left uncorrected. Sitting at a desk or computer, gymnastics, dance and other sporting activities also put stress on the spine. Having your child's spine checked by a Chiropractor regularly can help detect and correct subluxations early so they are more resistant to headaches, colds and flus, ear infections, allergies, stomach aches, bed wetting, growing pains and other common childhood ailments. Chiropractic adjustments can also help with proper brain and nerve development and mental and emotional issues such as ADD/ADHD, learning disabilities, concentration, sleep problems, and anxiety.
from the ICPA
"The Webster technique is a specific chiropractic analysis and diversified adjustment. The goal of the adjustment is to reduce the effects of subluxation and/or SI joint dysfunction. In so doing neurobiomechanical function in the sacral/pelvic region is improved.
The ICPA recognizes that in a theoretical and clinical framework of the Webster Technique in the care of pregnant women, sacral subluxation may contribute to difficult labor for the mother (i.e., dystocia). Dystocia is caused by inadequate uterine function, pelvic contraction, and baby malpresentation. 32 The correction of sacral subluxation may have a positive effect on all of these causes of dystocia.
In this clinical and theoretical framework, it is proposed that sacral misalignment may contribute to these three primary causes of dystocia via uterine nerve interference, pelvic misalignment and the tightening and torsion of specific pelvic muscles and ligaments. The resulting tense muscles and ligaments and their aberrant effect on the uterus may prevent the baby from comfortably assuming the best possible position for birth."
"Around my 20th week of pregnancy with my first child, I was informed that he was in the Frank breech position (feet up by his ears). I required many ultrasounds for my pregnancy, and each time it was confirmed that he was still in the Frank breech position week after week. My doula and I tried many methods to try to get him to flip, but nothing worked. We tried shining a light down in my lower abdomen, playing music down below, and trying to get gravity to help by using elevation techniques. Finally, she gave me a website with listings of chiropractors trained in something called the Webster's Technique. This chiropractic technique apparently had a very high success rate of flipping breech babies. I really wanted to avoid the c-section my OB was telling me I was heading towards if the baby didn't flip, so I eagerly made an appointment with Dr. Collins.
Staff at the clinic are amazing and very kind. Dr. Collins is extremely warm and personable, and really took the time to explain everything to me. I was placed on a special table to accommodate my large belly (by this time I was well into my third trimester), and he performed the technique on me. It didn't hurt at all!
I didn't feel any different right away, but later that night I KNEW something was happening. I was making supper when I felt the landscape of my stomach suddenly change. I looked down and saw waves of movement across my belly, and this was followed by a strong pressure against my cervix area. I called out to my husband in surprise, as my stomach felt SO different from how it had previously. About an hour later I felt the baby hiccup in my lower stomach instead of under my breasts. He'd flipped-I just knew it!
I have since had the technique done twice more, and I will continue with it until I deliver. I am now 32 weeks pregnant, and I am optimistic that I now have a great shot at avoiding a c-section thanks to Dr. Collins!
I recommend Dr. Collins and the Webster's Technique to any pregnant woman out there who has been told by her OB to expect a c-section due to a breech baby."
